What is tyre speed rating? How do you find tyre speed rating? Can I buy a tyre with a speed rating? It describes the top speed for which a tire is certified.

The speed rating of your tyre can be found on the on the outside of the sidewall. It’s shown as a letter after your size in the picture.

We recommend that you fit the correct speed rated tyre as recommended by the manufacturer of the vehicle. ZR indicates that the tyre can handle speeds superior to 1MPH It includes the category W and Y. Z-rated high-performance tyres are rated for speeds in excess of 149mph. Confusingly, W-rated tyres are rated at a higher speed in excess of 168mph. Y-rated tyres are rated in excess of 186mph.

It is strongly recommended to always fit tyres that have a speed capability and load index at least equal to or higher than those originally specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Finally, the load and speed rating (79T) means the maximum weight the tyre can carry is 437kg and the top speed is 1mph. The minimum legal tread depth in the UK is 1. The two digits before the speed rating symbol as show in the diagram as 91V are the load rating. The load- rating is essentially the maximum weight the tyre can carry. Tyre tread depth and wear. An H speed rating is at the low en or at the start of the performance tire speed ratings. H speed rated tires are ideal for sport and luxury coupes and sedans, but not typically considered full-fledged performance vehicles.
