It depicts a zephyr skimming the waves, and a nude winged figure is seen kissing a zephyr recumbent on a breaking wave. The heads of two other zephyrs and of Neptune, the god of the Sea, can be seen surrounded by octopus and crabs. It ended as the symbol of a contest among nations that foreshadowed war. Winning any of these events gave bragging rights to nations, made heroes of their pilots and thrilled millions and also played a major role in the outcome of World War II.

Affixed to card is a newspaper clipping of deperdussin seaplane which won the first schneider trophy race. The contest,scheduled on September 12th - actually took place on the 13th due to bad weather. The start and finish of the 1mile course was located at Ryde, and there were turning points NE of Cowes(IoW) and at West Wittering. It was intended to encourage technical advances in civil aviation but became a contest for pure speed with.
