Irish number plates explained

January” and “June” and a “2” denotes a vehicle regsitered between “July” and “December”. They have no year indicator whatsoever and cannot therefore be mistaken for those plates which do. And another interesting fact, as with all UK plates, we can choose whether we want the Euro-style plate with the Euro flag and GB on the left, whereas in the Republic of Ireland the Euro plate (with IRL) is compulsary.


However, it is ILLEGAL to display an NI reg number on an Irish Euro plate. They are based on a simple layout consisting of one letter that indicates the position in the series followed by a further two letters that denote the county or city of origin. They are also used to spell short names or words that would otherwise be difficult to obtain, such as BAZ, GAZ, or MIA.

This has led to them being used as convenient cover plates. In other words, these registration plates can be used to disguise the year of your vehicle. While plates in Englan Scotland and Wales are issued by the DVLA, plates in Northern Ireland have historically been issued by a different authority, the Driver Vehicle Licensing Northern Irelan abbreviated DVLNI.
